Ever wonder what it meant to be born on a certain day, or under a particular cycle of the moon? Does it really affect our personalities; make us who we truly are?

Sunday, the first day of the week, is named for the sun. Romans called this day dies solis, day of the sun. Anglo-Saxons of England called this day sunnandaeg, sun day.

Monday, the second day of the week, is named for the moon. The Romans called it dies lunae, day of the moon. Anglo-Saxons called it monandaeg, moon day.

Tuesday, the third day of the week, is named for Tyr, the Norse god of war. The Roman name for this day was dies Martis, Mar's day after their god of war. Anglo-Saxons called it Tiwesdaeg, Tiw's (Tyr's) day.

Wednesday, the fourth day of the week, is named for Woden (Odin), the supreme Norse god. Romans called this dies Mercurii, Mercury's day, for their messenger of the gods. Anglo-Saxons called this Wodnesdaeg, Woden's day.

Thursday, the fifth day of the week, is named for Thor, the Norse god of thunder. Romans called this day dies Jovis, Jove's day, after Jupiter, their ultimate god. Anglo-Saxons called this day Thuresdaeg, Thor's day.

Friday, the sixth day of the week, is named for Frigg, the Norse goddess of the heavens and married love and the wife of Odin. The Roman name for this day is dies Veneris, Venus's day, for their goddess of love. The Anglo-Saxon name for this day was Frigedaeg, Frigg's day.

Saturday, the seventh day of the week, is named for Saturn, the Roman god of farming. Romans called this day dies Saturni, Saturn's day. This became Saeterdaeg to Anglo-Saxons.

Personality Traits

According to the Mother Goose nursery rhyme:

  • Monday's child is fair of face,
  • Tuesday's child is full of grace,
  • Wednesday's child is full of woe,
  • Thursday's child has far to go.
  • Friday's child is loving and giving,
  • Saturday's child works hard for a living,
  • But the child born on the Sabbath Day,
  • Is fair and wise and good and gay.

  • Traditional astrological lore seems to suggest that persons born on days of the week "ruled" by a particular heavenly body (planet) may have some innate characteristics of that "ruler" regardless of whatever may be their Sun-Sign.

Sunday's child ("ruled" by the Sun)--Artisitic, proud and outgoing, leaning towards being self-centered and dominant. You are outgoing, self-possessed, poised, and dignified. You have unlimited self-assurance and unhesitatingly take your rightful place (preferably in the center) of any social group of which you are a part.

Monday's child ("ruled" by the Moon)-- kind and motherly, yet leaning towards being smothering in nature. You have a strong sense of your own personal space, and a respect for that of others; you are both gentle and firm (on the negative side, unyielding). Because you basically feel good about yourself, and truly like yourself, you make it easy for other people to like you as well. You are able to keep cool and collected no matter what is going on around you, because you are much attuned to your own inner voice, and you follow your own intuition with little regard for what other people might think of you.

Tuesday's child ("ruled" by Mars)-- brave with leadership abilities that lead towards arrogance. You are irrepressible, adventurous, and peppery. You have a shrewd, analytical mind which sees clearly through the ulterior motives of other people, and which instantly grasps the possibilities of profit in any situation. You are fearless in confronting other people; you don't shrink from conflict either.

Wednesday's child ("ruled" by Mercury)-- excellent communication skills that may lead to gossip. You are unabashed and plain-spoken, and do not hesitate to speak your mind and speak to the point. Your tart, no-nonsense approach to people and your ironic sense of humor cut through pretense and empty gesticulating and go right to the heart of matters. You tend to rely upon bull-headedness rather than subtlety or guile to get your way.

Thursday's child ("ruled" by Jupiter)-- generousity that can lead to self righteous conceit. You possess a detached intellectual curiosity and an open, nonjudgmental attitude towards others. You are forward-looking and hopeful, and are willing to tackle even arduous jobs with a spirit of dedication and enterprise.

Friday's child ("ruled" by Venus)-- very affectionate and empathic and yet can be vain and lazy. You possess a starry-eyed idealism, freshness, and naivete. Your innocuousness and artlessness disarm other people and put them at ease. You are thoroughly candid and not afraid to let it all hang out; to express your true feelings openly and make yourself vulnerable to other people, because you feel you have nothing to be ashamed of or to hide. You are capable of reaching out to others in a spirit of good will and good faith, but can be easily discouraged by their lack of giving back.

Saturday's child ("ruled" by Saturn)--overly professional and cold; envious. You are serious-minded and reserved, and possess a dignified bearing; high-minded and courageous, and are always willing to stand alone on your own two feet. You can be independent to the point of contrariness, and be maddeningly aloof and blase

    Lunar Personality Types

New Moon - you have a childlike wonder and excitement about life; open and demonstrative, you think and act spontaneously. You are constantly coming up with new ideas, and have a tendency to exhaust yourself by completely throwing yourself into a project. However, you will find it hard to maintain your pace as you age.

First or Waxing Crescent Moon - you are assertive, adventurous, and filled with joyous curiosity about life. You are constantly expanding your understanding, but have a difficulty maintaining a balance between conventional thought and the unorthodox.

First Quarter Moon - you are positive and strong-willed; physically and mentally active; constantly on the go and always looking for the healthy aspects of everything you do. With you questioning mind though, you have the tendency to come off as too eager, demanding and, sometimes, argumentative. You like change, to the point of constantly seeking newness in your life.

Waxing Gibbous Moon - You are a caring person who seeks to put calming influences upon the world. You see this as a "mission" of bringing "enlightenment" to the world. But be careful, as you may tend to push this upon others whether they wish it or not.

Full Moon - Being born in the middle of the lunar cycle leaves you at a point where balance is an integral part of your life. Creativity is tempered by logic; you are open to new ideas, and yet analyze them with common sense. You have a tendency to be emotional, but find an inner strength to overcome obstacles. While you stand in the present, you commune with the past, and look forward to future experiences.

Disseminating Moon - As you learn, you have a need to communicate your knowledge to others, and, most likely, will become a teacher of some kind. You have a zeal to improve the world, but need to find compromises on how you communicate with others; you tend to be dominating and pushy.

Last Quarter Moon - With your understanding and sympathy, you tend to take on the role of counselor; helping others to solve their problems and find new pathways in their lives. However, you have a tendency to concentrate on the past, and need to start focusing on the future before depression and regret take over.

Balsamic Moon -Intuitive and far-sighted, you have innate wisdom and a mystical understanding of the workings of Mother Nature and of the human condition. You are a spiritual person, and you see the many beginnings and endings that life holds. However, you often go through life in a dream-like state, causing others to see you as "not having both feet on the ground".

    Putting the Hypothesis to Work

I was born on December 26, 1958 which was a Friday. Personality traits for a Friday's child is: very affectionate and empathic and yet can be vain and lazy.

I was born under a full moon, those traits being: Being born in the middle of the lunar cycle leaves you at a point where balance is an integral part of your life. Creativity is tempered by logic; you are open to new ideas, and yet analyze them with common sense. You have a tendency to be emotional, but find an inner strength to overcome obstacles. While you stand in the present, you commune with the past, and look forward to future experiences.

Now I let a couple of people, who know me well, read this over, and we're in agreement that it is pretty much spot on, except I don't exhibit the negative traits of being vain or lazy.

So now lets try this on my husband, who was born on March 15, 1972, a Wednesday: excellent communication skills that may lead to gossip.

It was a new moon: you have a childlike wonder and excitement about life; open and demonstrative, you think and act spontaneously. You are constantly coming up with new ideas, and have a tendency to exhaust yourself by completely throwing yourself into a project. However, you will find it hard to maintain your pace as you age.

Two for two, as this pretty much fits my husband's personality profile.

One more, our best friend, who was born on July 27, 1972, a Thursday: generousity that can lead to self righteous conceit. You possess a detached intellectual curiosity and an open, nonjudgmental attitude towards others. You are forward-looking and hopeful, and are willing to tackle even arduous jobs with a spirit of dedication and enterprise.

Under a full moon: Being born in the middle of the lunar cycle leaves you at a point where balance is an integral part of your life. Creativity is tempered by logic; you are open to new ideas, and yet analyze them with common sense. You have a tendency to be emotional, but find an inner strength to overcome obstacles. While you stand in the present, you commune with the past, and look forward to future experiences.

Now here we found that he does not fit the trait of being "nonjudgmental attitude towards others", and he is most definitely not an emotional person, but all the other traits fit him for the most part.

So, going by these three examples, the day of the week you were born on, and the lunar phase on that day, can influence, perhaps even predetermine, your personality traits.
